Patient/Family Homecare Volunteers – provides four hours of respite to the primary caregiver so he/she can run necessary errands, go to lunch with a friend, go to scheduled appointments, etc. These requests are usually scheduled on the same day and time of every week until the patient passes or services are no longer needed.
Patient/Family Facility Volunteers – provide companionship visits to Avow Hospice patients residing in skilled nursing or assisted living facilities throughout Collier County. As a facility Volunteer you may be asked to read, play cards, go for a walk, or just hold the hand of our patients. Visits are scheduled on a weekly basis but provide flexibility because there is no set day or time.
Patient/Family Georgeson House Inpatient Volunteers – provide weekly scheduled visits to our patients and their families who are currently at our inpatient facility. You may also be asked to assist the Clinical Administrative Assistant with paperwork, assist the kitchen with delivering/retrieving meal trays, care for floral arrangements, etc.
Doula Companion Volunteers – these Volunteers serve as life companions for our patients who have no one to walk with them through the last days of their lives. Doulas are trusted partners who commit to staying with their assigned patient more frequently, forming a strong bond, offering compassion and friendship. Doula Volunteers are patient/family Volunteers who receive additional training in areas such as Spiritual Care, Cultural Diversity, Complementary Therapies, Understanding Aspects of Grief, etc.
Licensed Hairdresser Volunteers – these are trained Volunteers who provide hairdressing services to our patients in their homes. These Volunteers must hold a valid hairdressing license.
PAWS (Pets are Wonderful Souls) Volunteers – these are trained facility Volunteers who make facility visits with their certified* canines. Dogs must be one year of age or older and certified as a Canine Good Citizen, Delta Pet Partner or any other type of advanced training. Bereavement Volunteers – our Bereavement Department utilizes Volunteers in two ways: making phone calls to family members who have recently lost a loved one in our program, and guiding support group attendees to the designated meeting room and other areas of the administration building.
Hand Aromatherapy – Trained volunteers use essential oils and room spray Provide gentle hand massage to relieve stress and restlessness. Regularly assigned to patients at home or in facilities. (2-4 hours upon request)
Transportation – Patient must be able to ambulate unassisted without medical devices; to MD appointments, shopping, hair dressers, nails, business.
Starz & Stripes for VETS – Volunteers with veteran status are assigned to fellow veterans, recognition of service, and historical review of service connection if requested (2-4 hours weekly)
Professional Volunteers – Florida Licensed professionals with active license; social workers, music therapists, clergy, mental health (2-4 hours weekly).
Office Volunteers – assist with clerical duties in our Administration Building or one of our satellite offices when needed. These duties include filing, sorting, making telephone calls, creating manuals, photocopying, etc. These Volunteers work in various departments and are trained accordingly by each department. They also participate in assembling large mailings.
Treasures and Books Volunteers – Treasures is our resale shop where there is a variety of tasks to choose from. Volunteers assist customers, create displays, stock shelves, categorize books in the library, and work in the clothing boutique. All sales benefit Avow Hospice.
Special Event Volunteers – any trained Volunteer can participate in fundraising events that take place for Avow’s benefit. Wrapping gifts for donations, selling raffle tickets, or running a concession stand are just a few ways to get involved. Scheduled events primarily take place November through April.
Teen Volunteers – this program is for Collier County students between the ages of 14 -18 who need to fulfill community service hours. Students participate in a special orientation where they learn about Avow Hospice and prepare for visiting Avow patients living in skilled nursing facilities and at Frances Georgeson Hospice House. Teen Volunteers may participate in special events and fundraisers such as bake sales and carwashes or work at Avow’s resale shop, Treasures and Books.
